It reminds me of many other works of art I have seen. It is neat to see that in the past, skinny was not the "in" thing. It is so good to see that in the past, women had real bodies. I liked the link on recommended reading. I think it provided more sources for women who wanted to know more than this website could provide. I also liked the link on activism because it is important for women to know they can make a difference.

Love Your Body Day

I love this website! I think it was really cool that this website had a tab about what could be done on campus to promote loving one's body.

Fat Fu

I did not like how this website talked down to the "war on childhood obesity". I completely disagree with the publisher on this topic. Currently working in schools, I have noticed an increase in childhood obesity. Many of these students have no concept of nutrition. A shocking number of these students eat fast food more than three times a week. In addition, many of their parents are not educated when it comes to nutrition. I think there needs to be a program which educates both students and parents. I do not think, though, that childhood obesity is something that is ridiculous, but rather a sad occurrence. The number of students with Type 2 Diabetes in the school I am at, alone, has increased 10% in the last ten years.

Fat Acceptance Stuff

I really liked how this website had a huge variety of stuff on it. I liked the tab for legal stuff. I think this is really important. I am a firm believer that every citizen should know their rights, especially their civil rights. I think this can only empower someone. I think the legal portion can be very helpful. I know when people are harassed and such they often do not know what is "okay" and what is too far. I think this is a great resource for people.

I also loved the portion on traveling. I take for granted my smaller size often. It is interesting to hear that they are doing this because that is positive, however they are only adding XL, XXL and XXL. This was the headline statement on the website. I thought that it was interesting that people would even ask that question and then even more shocking that people actually said that that would be a reason for aborting a child. I am pro-choice and believe that women have the right to make decisions about their body but I can't believe that women would find out that her child might be over weight and then in turn not want to have that child. This was a good opening to the website because it got my attention. As all the websites it was helpful, informative and interesting. What was special about this website is that it was shocking with bold statements that created thought. At the end of the website there was a quote that I thought was important, "You can have the life you want in the body you already have!"

Love Your Body Day

The first thing that I saw on this website was "Do you love what you see when you look in the mirror?" This immediately got my attention. Do I love the way I look? The website goes on to talk about the media and how popular culture teaches us that we can always be better and need to buy products and change our lives so we "fit in." This website gave accurate and interesting information. It would be a good site for people who are struggling with the repercussions of our media and for people who want to learn about the "fat" issue.

Reflecting Venus

This quote at the top of the homepage is horrify and very sad because the fact that so many people dispise fat to the point that they would take a childs life is discusting. It is so unfortunate that so many people are caught up in this idea that you are not normal if you aren’t thin. Overall, I really liked this website. It is all about changing people’s perceptions about people who are larger. I like the statement that is made on the main page of the website. “The Issue is NOT: whether fat people are healthy. some are, some aren't (like thin people)” It shows how alike we all really are, whether thin or fat, tall or short we all have things in common and we need to accept the difference and the similarities.

Love Your Body Day:

I really like the overall positive message that this website exhibits. I especially liked the advertisement section where they showed what ads are offensive to women and which one’s are positive towards women. Although I agree with the idea this person was putting out there, I don't think that I need someone telling me what to think. I do think that the sock portion that this blogger wrote about was good. I think that it is good that some companies are taking into account the fact that some people have larger calves than others and they are making socks large enough for larger women.
I guess overall, I like to go to sites that offer up good, solid information rather than what someone thinks...if i want to read about someones opinion i would just write my own blog...Overall I think this blog was boring and i totally lost interest...sorry!

Reflecting Venus

I thought that this site had a really good idea and mission statement. I completely agree with their mission and what they are trying to do, but I think that if the site looked a little more professional and didn't have those ads at the top (which confused me at first...I thought they were links), then it would get its point across even stronger. I think that my favorite part about this site was the Big Beautiful Women section. I think that this really shows that there are people out there who stand for being large and are comfortable with who they are. I think that these women that were shown here really do a great job of being a positive role model for women everywhere that look up to them. I think that there needs to be more people out there like these "celebrities" because the more that people show support for these and other women, the closer everyone can get to accepting everyone the way they are and treat them as an equal rather than different.

Love Your Body

I really enjoyed this site. I think that it is different from a lot of the ones we have seen in this class because it has a supportive and positive element to it that I think other sites are often missing. I think that this site has a lot of great information and tips on ways that you can appreciate and celebrate your body.
I think my favorite part of this site was the "on campus" section of the site. I think that this had a lot of great activities and suggestions that were for women on campus who want to promote positive body image for women. I thought that another really interesting part of this site was the section with the negative ads. Its amazing and disgusting to me how many ads there are that totally put women down and use their body as a "toy" rather than as a person. I really would love to see women loving their bodies everyday, but at least there's one day a year when women can really get in touch with their bodies. I too like the poster contest and believe that it is for an awesome cause, I will most definitely be partaking in the contest. Another aspect of the site that I really enjoyed was the What you can do aspect... this list gave some great ideas into getting in touch with our bodies. I really think that the book written by Jada Pickett Smith, with the pictures of her and her daughter/ her poetry would be a great gift, or book to own for inspiration. I would love to start something like this here at Oregon State. I know that we have our Women's Center calendars fighting the violence against women, but a book of accomplished women would be beautiful too.

Reflecting Venus

The Issue is NOT:
whether or not anyone finds us attractive.
some do, some don't (like thin people)
The Issue is NOT:
whether fat people are healthy.
some are, some aren't (like thin people)
THE ISSUE IS:
whether people's perceptions of us give them the right to treat us like sub-humans.
It is time for fat people to just say NO to bigots!

Unfortunately this is very sad, but it is true, when are women/men that are seen in society going to get a break... you're damn if you do, and if you don't. "obesity is not a sin, moral failing or lifestyle choice."- Reflecting beauty does a great job in fighting against biogtry.

Back in Skinny Jeans

Wow! I think i got so overwhelmed that i just ignored the site all together. not the most entertaining or informative...

Fat Acceptance Stuff

Wow....I think thats about all I can say here. I had no idea that there were resources out there like this. I think this site is great because it offers fat women (and men) different resources for services that are size-accepting. I think the one that caught me most off guard was the one where you could look for a car that accommodates larger people. Another one that I thought was pretty interesting was the legal resources. I guess this is not something that would automatically come to mind, but i can only imagine how much size discrimination can effect someones life, and that goes for any service they may be looking for including legal services that are size-accepting.

Kelly Bliss

I think the thing that caught my eye most about this site was the fact that the people in the workout videos that were offered were not stick thin, model-looking women who were working out and not breaking a sweat, but rather it was a group of real women who were working out and sweating their asses off. The more I thought about the way this workout video was "cast", the more i realized that I couldn't think of a single one that had larger women as the people working out. I think that if you are going to promote exercise at every size, then that should be reflected in the video, and thats exactly what this woman did. pretty inspiring if you ask me...

Damaged Goods

This article is a very controversial one; while as my personal belief system do not believe in pro choice, if a woman does decide to have an abortion she in no way deserves to be criticized and blown up at. I think this idea is very interesting and also honestly feel that you could only find this kind of stuff written in New York or Portland. I love it. But this was by far one of the most influential sites about life-coaching and living life "the way you are". I really enjoyed reading about Kelly's life and her ways of helping people. She does everything from workout tapes for plus-size individuals, to provide shopping resources on-line. As a former student in the college of psychology I find it very interesting that she was a phone therapist, working through with individuals on their issues over the phones. I did however feel a little discouraged to the amount that it has been updated in certain areas. The activism area was great, except that it hadn't been updated since January 2005, 4 years ago, I really think that this can make this site seems very out of touch and invaluable. I feel that this site has a lot of positive ways to help people dealing with weight issues and not, but I would like to see a cleaner way fo organizing it and presenting it more. I feel that it is important to get support internationally and work to not allow boundaries of location seperate the group tormented everyday due to their appearances, but I also felt the title being very not about internationality at all. Great site, toward the right direction.

Largely Positive

This is a really great website and laid out that is very user-friendly. I really liked the message behind this site, and the amount of effort into changing the "frame of mind" rather then the "person". This past Thursday evening I had a self-esteem women's empowerment workshop, and would have loved to incorporate this into the night. We talked of our issues as women with our amount of importance that we put with our appearance and watch "Real Women have Curves", among a couple of other films. This site shared great resources to understanding how to change low self-esteem and really worked with the greater issues hurting self-esteem, that being weight. Thanks Largely Positive :)

Fat Fu

I really liked this website because it was a place where anyone can write their experiences or thoughts about fat. I can understand why there are teeny aerobic instructors because thats how they sell the product, to say that you will look like them if you follow their tape. But for those of us who are not a size 2 or are out of shape, it's nice to workout with someone you can relate to , not someone you wish you could be. I don’t know how many times I’ve read about how some celebrity is either criticizing or appreciating the body they have. This site addresses what celebrities are stating. For example Kelly Clarkson recently discussed the issues behind photo shopping, at a Dove self esteem workshop for teens. Basically she stated that not everyone is perfect, which is a good point however, she basically stated that no matter what body you have you are never going to be good enough. What a bad message to send to teen girls. Hopefully, the statements were taken out of context, but anyway I’m glad that someone has the nerve to step up a speak out against the things these celebrities say.

International Size

This particular website was empowering. Overall, it is all about acceptance, acceptance of yourself and of others.

Big Fat Deal

I thought this blog was really cool. The article I read was about ruffles. The website talks about the positive aspects of ruffles (i.e. very girly) versus the negative aspects such as making it look flattering on your body. I think it was more of a resource website, than one with a bunch of information- it refers you to related websites. I found it interesting that they used the website to advocate for children who have been taken away from their homes because they parents were "neglecting" their children by overfeeding them. I recognize there are diseases which can cause children to be overweight, or can cause children to steal food and continuously eat. My issue with the advocacy is it is too one-sided. They tell you the parents side of the story, but not Child Protective Services' side of the story. I think everyone should be well-educated on an entire issue before picking a side and advocating.

Fat Fu

That song about boobs cracked me up! Its really sad to hear, but I thought it was a little ironic...

Council on Size & Weight Discrimination

I really like the information this website had to offer. This is an excerpt from the website which I thought was a good analysis/timeline of the evolution of icons, and their beauty representation in regards to weight.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Twiggy may have seemed to be just the right size in the sixties, but the audiences of the fifties preferred Marilyn Monroe's fuller figure. The body weight of the woman picked as Miss America has gone down each year since the inception of that pageant. And the turn-of-the-century star Lillian Russell, said by many to be the most beautiful woman of all time, weighed between 180 and 200 pounds.

I feel that some of the most beautiful women that I have seen in the media these days, range from really curvy (voluptuous) women like Selma Hayek, to one of my favorites, America Ferrera. This women are true to their heritage and have positive self images, that impact women all over the world. I hope to one day be seen as an icon like America, not in the actress aspect, but as a well known icon/leader.

Invocation for the Size Rights Movement; Largesse

Invocation for the
Size Rights Movement
Let the voices for size rights be heard
From the highest mountain to the deepest valley
In cities, towns, and villages
Wherever humankind may dwell
Let them plant in the hearts and minds
Of every child, woman, and man
The seeds of size diversity empowerment
In fertile, fallow fields
Let them grow
In the sunlight of reason
With the driving rains of change
To abundant harvests
Of food for thought
Let these voices sing their songs
Of disappointment and of hope
Of anger and of joy
Of frustration and of accomplishment
Through all the vicissitudes
Of human condition and experience
Let them bring
To the struggles of people of size
Dignity, pride, and unity

Let this be our vision and our quest....

This is beautiful, I am speechless. I am happy that they are trying to flatter women's bodies, but this quote just shares that idea of "bigger isn't flattering, and how bad things would like"

"First up, let's look at ruffles. For the curvy girl, ruffles can be a little tricky, as they will accentuate and enlarge wherever they adorn. We all know there's nothing wrong with looking bigger, but some bigger just isn't flattering. Think of how unflattering large boobs look with a high-neck or turtleneck jumper; all matronly and, frankly, sow-like. I like how this focuses more on the weight issues than positive weight attitudes.

Largesse

This website had technical problems when I tried to access it. It is a blog that discusses weight issues in the media and just life in general. The first story discussed Mary-Kate Olsen and how girls see her "thinness" as an inspiration. One girl even stated how when she feels the urge to give in and eat she just looks at a picture of Mary-Kate. It is sad to see girls choosing role models based on their thinness. What ever happened to looking up to those who change the world like Mother Teresa and Rosa Parks. It is unfortunate because this thinking and overall focus on being thin only fuels the fire around weight and weight bias issues.

Adipositivity

Wow, this site was very interesting. I think that something like this is a great was to show support for size-acceptance and support for those struggling with the idea. I think that this Big Fat Blog is really cool because it has had over 3,000 subscribers since its debut and is one of the largest fat-acceptance blogs on the web. This was funny to me because it made me wonder if anyone out there is reading our blogs...kind of a funny thought to me...
I think that this blog creates a safe place for people to talk about and connect with others on the topic of size acceptance. This portion of the site went over a bunch of different myths and ideas that a lot of people have about larger people and their weight. I think this portion of the site was very informative because it helped squash some of the common misconceptions that people may have about being heavier in our society. I think that people should read these things and really try to open their minds to the idea that being heavier than average does not make you less of a person. As everyone knows, a picture is worth a thousand words, and the pictures on this site sent many strong messages about the human body and size acceptance. I think i really liked how strong the images were because they showcased the fact that the female body, both large and small, can be beatiful. i think that these photos do a great job at making that point. I think that people need to see images like this more often rather than images of larger people having to cover up. It’s hard to see in black and white that people hate you just because of your body, and it is hard to accept that people who have never met you think you are stupid/a liar/delusional/evil/a scourge on the human race and that nothing will sway them from that position. It was enlightening to see in myself that I am not yet at a point in my FA journey to be able to immediately dismiss that haters. This experience helped me in learning that skill though. It also opened my eyes a littl more to the real evil of bigotry, no matter who its victims are.

I also really HATE it when I am RIGHT and they are WRONG and they JUST WON’T ADMIT IT and I can’t SLAP THEM. Literally

Literally... this is the most amazing website advocating for women of size I have ever seen. It was really organized in a manner that really shared the beauty behind what a lot of our society doesn't see, beauty, authenticity, strength and truth. I love this site, and favorited it right away. It reminds me of one of my dreams in life, to be a nude model (at least once in my life) for a life drawing class. Sites like this bring inspiration to me and really share a strength/courage that many people fear. Physical beauty comes in all shapes and sizes and colors, and I think that this site definitely shares that.
I went to a women's leadership conference this past friday in portland, and one of the sessions I listened to was about reclaiming the "F" word, "Fat" especially on college campuses, and with sites like this I think, we definitely as a community could be inspired to make the change to acceptance of all forms, that in fact are beauty.

Body Positive :)

I really enjoy this site and the aspects it brings to help women seek out a positive self-body image. There are many links that I clicked on in interest, so the general overall use of the site is easy and interesting. I really like how I felt that I could contribute to the site, but putting in my say. I wrote in on the 200 ways to love you body, in which I wrote how I felt about my body, which at the moment is really good. I also saw that there was a 200 things I would lose if I stopped loving my body, and to be honest if I quite loving my body I would lose my curves (my real women curves) and my breasts, two things I love :)
*The only thing that I think could/should be changed about the site, is the color scheme, it really screams carrots! to me, with the oranges and light greens, it just screams eat me! I sincerely think it does, and as I continue to analyze the media that I am confronted with, I meet it with open arms, but will question it, so I think that although it's great, the colors need to be more inclusive to the context.

Big Fat Deal

This is another good website for women who are concerned about their bodies, or not, and are able to safely talk to other women about issues they are facing. It gives good facts to help women to see that while you will get results from dieting, the moment you stop your diet you will soon get very negative results. This website is also a good resource to prove that no matter what you do eventually you will end up the way you are so you might as well accept and love yourself the way you are now.
