Salon Broadsheet

The story on this website was about whether or not "setexting" caused a teen's suicide. The story talked about how the girl was called names such as "slut" and "whore". I think often we forget names like this can really hurt someone. These names are often focused with the outward way a person looks. I really liked how this website brought in real-life, interesting stories that related to bodies and body images.

Reflecting Venus

I loved the vintage art of the first page of this website. It reminds me of many other works of art I have seen. It is neat to see that in the past, skinny was not the "in" thing. It is so good to see that in the past, women had real bodies. I liked the link on recommended reading. I think it provided more sources for women who wanted to know more than this website could provide. I also liked the link on activism because it is important for women to know they can make a difference.

Love Your Body Day

I love this website! It has some really great things on it. It was shocking, yet really not suprising to see that 80% of women are not happy with their bodies. I think it is neat that this website had this fact on the first page because it is a staggering statistic. I think it was really cool that this website had a tab about what could be done on campus to promote loving one's body.

Fat Fu

I did not like how this website talked down to the "war on childhood obesity". I completely disagree with the publisher on this topic. Currently working in schools, I have noticed an increase in childhood obesity. Many of these students have no concept of nutrition. A shocking number of these students eat fast food more than three times a week. In addition, many of their parents are not educated when it comes to nutrition. I think there needs to be a program which educates both students and parents. I do not think, though, that childhood obesity is something that is ridiculous, but rather a sad occurrence. The number of students with Type 2 Diabetes in the school I am at, alone, has increased 10% in the last ten years.

Fat Acceptance Stuff

I really liked how this website had a huge variety of stuff on it. I liked the tab for legal stuff. I think this is really important. I am a firm believer that every citizen should know their rights, especially their civil rights. I think this can only empower someone. I think the legal portion can be very helpful. I know when people are harassed and such they often do not know what is "okay" and what is too far. I think this is a great resource for people.

I also loved the portion on traveling. I take for granted my smaller size often. It was almost a culture shock to see what cars larger people can fit into more comfortably because this is not an issue for me. I think this is amazing and it, too, can be empowering for larger people.

Kelly Bliss

I think this website had an okay idea, but was overall, a disaster. This website looked extremely dated. It seemed as though it had not been updated since the 1990's. In addition, it was too crowded. It was hard to navigate because there were SO MANY links. I did not like how this website had a large focus on selling a product. If this website was truly about the well-being of others, than I think they should consider condensing the sale part of it. The very first thing I saw on the web page was a sales pitch for a workout video.

Largely Positive

I found this website really helpful. I liked how it was organized. I especially liked the tab on "Self-Esteem Make Over". I think this is an awesome idea. Often people are so concerned with making over the outside of themselves that they forget the inside. I think the tips on this page are amazing. This would be fun to do as a lesson with middle school students.

Shapely Prose

fabulous website! This was a website that addresses important feminist issues and I looked at the section related to body image. The article that was first presented was about how Forever 21 is creating a plus line. However the issue is if it is really going to be plus or are they just going to make the clothe with an added label on the tag that says XL. It is interesting to hear that they are doing this because that is positive, however they are only adding XL, XXL and XXL. This is just giving more sizes but not making it acceptable for bigger people to be bigger because you are calling them extra extra extra large!

reflecting venues

"11% of the respondents in a recent survey said that, if a genetic predisposition to obesity was identified in their unborn children, they would opt for abortion." This was the headline statement on the website. I thought that it was interesting that people would even ask that question and then even more shocking that people actually said that that would be a reason for aborting a child. I am pro-choice and believe that women have the right to make decisions about their body but I can't believe that women would find out that her child might be over weight and then in turn not want to have that child. This was a good opening to the website because it got my attention. As all the websites it was helpful, informative and interesting. What was special about this website is that it was shocking with bold statements that created thought. At the end of the website there was a quote that I thought was important, "You can have the life you want in the body you already have!"

Love Your Body Day

The first thing that I saw on this website was "Do you love what you see when you look in the mirror?" This immediately got my attention. Do I love the way I look? The website goes on to talk about the media and how popular culture teaches us that we can always be better and need to buy products and change our lives so we "fit in." This website gave accurate and interesting information. It would be a good site for people who are struggling with the repercussions of our media and for people who want to learn about the "fat" issue.

Reflecting Venus

This quote at the top of the homepage is horrify and very sad because the fact that so many people dispise fat to the point that they would take a childs life is discusting. I like the link on this page "BBW" all of these women are amazing and beautiful and there should be more role models like this!

Fat Acceptance stuff

This website was not as flashy as previous ones i have bloged about but there are some very good resources that i would have never even thought larger people had to deal with. The one that stood out to me was the Travil Resources which talks about models of cars that work best for larger people, tips for air travil, and seat belt extenders for cars! how cool is that!

Kelly Bliss

I really liked the focus of this website because its different then alot of others in that it focuses on ones health and not actual weight loss. We talk about this alot in class and its important to care and focus on your body for what it can do and not what it can look like. It seems like there is alot of usful tooks for people who are plus size like work out videos, health tips and health and wellness coaching! Great job Mrs. Bliss!

International Size Acceptance association

The graphics on this pages main homepage were definity eye catching! There is a link to Joy Nash's "Fat Rant" which we watched in one of our classes. That video i think is so inspirational for people to love the skin they are in and i think she is a great plus size role model so having it available on this site is great!

Largely Positive

One word! amazing! this site is so well put together and proffessional looking but not in a boring stuffy way. Its very inviting with its bright colors and the bullet points for the different links on the page are flowers which is so cute!!! The section that i found most interesting and helpful is the "Myths/facts" link. Did you know that even though 3500 calories does equal a pount of weight people can gain this weight at different rates because of there metabolism rate, thats why some people are stick thin and still can eat tons of junk food, and some people eat very healthy but still battle weight gain...

CSWD

This website i think is a very good one because it is not extremely cluttered with random stuff but has a simple homepage layout. I looked through the links located near the top of the homepage and found alot of very useful information for people dealing with discrimination of weight and i guess everyone! One link that stood out to me was on health, and that most times people intertwine weight and health. but people need to realise that they often are not even connected to one another and if everyone accepted this then people would be judged less for being overweight.

Largesse

I think this website is although bright and colorful not very full with just a few different items to look at on the homepage. I think the poem Invocation for the size rights movement is very moving (no pun intended). I found it interesting that the founder of this website died because of a weight loss surgery. If she was trying to get people to accept themselves for what ever shape or size they are then why did she need to change herself? ...

A celebration of Curves:

The main purpose of this blog is to discuss beauty and life not matter what size you are. This website gives off a very positive vibe which I like. It focuses less on actual appearance an more on the fact that by being yourself no matter what shape or size makes you truly beautiful and that is what should be celebrated.

Reflecting Venus:

Wow, so the quote on this website really shocked me. It is so unfortunate that so many people are caught up in this idea that you are not normal if you aren’t thin. Overall, I really liked this website. It is all about changing people’s perceptions about people who are larger. I like the statement that is made on the main page of the website. “The Issue is NOT: whether fat people are healthy. some are, some aren't (like thin people)” It shows how alike we all really are, whether thin or fat, tall or short we all have things in common and we need to accept the difference and the similarities.

Love Your Body Day:

I really like the overall positive message that this website exhibits. I especially liked the advertisement section where they showed what ads are offensive to women and which one’s are positive towards women. I guess, I never really realized how many offensive ads there are, probably due to the fact that there are so many that you become immune; however, it great to see that there are advertisements out there that show women and their bodies in a positive way.

The Rotund

I honestly thought this site was lame. I just don't like going on to someones blog and reading about what they think about something and have to deal with them trying to change my opinions or sway me. Although I agree with the idea this person was putting out there, I don't think that I need someone telling me what to think. I do think that the sock portion that this blogger wrote about was good. I think that it is good that some companies are taking into account the fact that some people have larger calves than others and they are making socks large enough for larger women.
I guess overall, I like to go to sites that offer up good, solid information rather than what someone thinks...if i want to read about someones opinion i would just write my own blog...Overall I think this blog was boring and i totally lost interest...sorry!

Reflecting Venus

I thought that this site had a really good idea and mission statement. I completely agree with their mission and what they are trying to do, but I think that if the site looked a little more professional and didn't have those ads at the top (which confused me at first...I thought they were links), then it would get its point across even stronger. I think that my favorite part about this site was the Big Beautiful Women section. I think that this really shows that there are people out there who stand for being large and are comfortable with who they are. I think that these women that were shown here really do a great job of being a positive role model for women everywhere that look up to them. I think that there needs to be more people out there like these "celebrities" because the more that people show support for these and other women, the closer everyone can get to accepting everyone the way they are and treat them as an equal rather than different.

Love Your Body

I really enjoyed this site. I think that it is different from a lot of the ones we have seen in this class because it has a supportive and positive element to it that I think other sites are often missing. I think that this site has a lot of great information and tips on ways that you can appreciate and celebrate your body.
I think my favorite part of this site was the "on campus" section of the site. I think that this had a lot of great activities and suggestions that were for women on campus who want to promote positive body image for women. I thought that another really interesting part of this site was the section with the negative ads. Its amazing and disgusting to me how many ads there are that totally put women down and use their body as a "toy" rather than as a person. I think that the awareness this site brings is very positive for women.

The F word.org, check it out

While looking through the right side columns of blogs/websites to connect with, I found The F word.org... a really great site dedicated to women. This site is directed for Food, Fat and Feminism... complete with a little girl at the top alongside red checkerboard eating brownies... I really liked this site for it's appeal and the blog-server it provides that allows women from all over the world to express their views, in such a way regarding feminism, food and fat. It is set up in ways like our blog that we have for class, and provides lots of resources. Check it out

Love your Body day

I really enjoyed this site, for it's dedication to women. I really would love to see women loving their bodies everyday, but at least there's one day a year when women can really get in touch with their bodies. I too like the poster contest and believe that it is for an awesome cause, I will most definitely be partaking in the contest. Another aspect of the site that I really enjoyed was the What you can do aspect... this list gave some great ideas into getting in touch with our bodies. I really think that the book written by Jada Pickett Smith, with the pictures of her and her daughter/ her poetry would be a great gift, or book to own for inspiration. I would love to start something like this here at Oregon State. I know that we have our Women's Center calendars fighting the violence against women, but a book of accomplished women would be beautiful too.

Reflecting Venus

The Issue is NOT:
whether or not anyone finds us attractive.
some do, some don't (like thin people)
The Issue is NOT:
whether fat people are healthy.
some are, some aren't (like thin people)
THE ISSUE IS:
whether people's perceptions of us give them the right to treat us like sub-humans.
It is time for fat people to just say NO to bigots!

Unfortunately this is very sad, but it is true, when are women/men that are seen in society going to get a break... you're damn if you do, and if you don't. I really think people should start saying "NO", I will not feel like shit when others push me down with their words, and their actions... I will fight this alienation, not with HATE but with TRUTH. This website does a great job of being inspiring but lack real action... I think that within their mission statement and through the site, creativity and heart is shown. "obesity is not a sin, moral failing or lifestyle choice."- Reflecting beauty does a great job in fighting against biogtry.

Back in Skinny Jeans

Wow! A magazine cover with a beautiful woman on it who wasn't showing us how slutty she can look, she looked adorable; a cute dress, very modest, and she was smiling as though she were having fun not as if she were trying to seduce us. Why do they put women on the covers of magazines who are almost completely exposing their breasts if we(women) are the target audience?

Reflecting Venus

I like seeing the paintings from over a hundred years ago, paintings of what was considered the most beautiful women; before fast food and tv and sedentary life styles...guess what?! They were not skinny! They had large hips, undefined stomachs, and...cellulite! This was the image of beauty for thousands of years, why did we have to change?

Love Your Body Day

I think our society needs a love your body day, well it needs several of them, but if we can have at least one day where no one is ashamed of their bodies then that will still make quite a difference to change society's hold on the idea of beauty. I also loved the posters, especially the one with all of the cosmetics and the sign said,"money can't buy self-esteem".
