Overall, I really liked the message this site was sending. The "gallery of winners" portion of the site which showcases advertisements that are positive towards women and their health, I saw a bunch of advertisements that really seemed like they were promoting a healthy lifestyle. One that I really liked was the ad for BAN deodorant. The test on the ad said "Ban Self Doubt, Ban Excuses, Ban Peer Pressure, Ban Fear, Ban Stereotypes, Ban Inhibition, Ban Broken Hearts, Ban Conformity, Ban Ignorance, Ban Hate"... I think this was a really great message to send out with this ad because it looks at a lot of issues that surround women and it faces them head on with a play on words. I liked this because I personally thought it sent out a very empowering message to women.
After I looked at the "Gallery of winners", I moved on to the "Gallery of offenders". The fact that Marc Jacobs has this ad with Victoria Beckham in a friggin' bag with her legs sticking out like she is a product is disgusting to me. Not to mention the other advertisements I've seen her in. Most of her other ads consist of her either coming out of a box or standing there amaciated to no end. To me, she is the perfect example of what not to show when promoting body image. She has boobs that look like balloons sitting on her chest and she really does not look healthy to me. I think that this ad just objectifies her and many women. I didn't like this ad at all. By the way, sorry about the rant about "Posh Spice"...I just don't think she sends out a very good message to women...
Overall, I thought this site did a great job in showing the many different ways that body image and health are portrayed in the media and I think it was really interesting when comparing the winners to the offenders. It really helps to show how terrible advertising can be.

I remember when I was little and I saw that ad for BAN deodorant in 17 magazine. I ripped out the ad and put in on my door. As a teenager I found some sort of empowerment in that advertisement. When can we change the advertising industry to help young women instead of hurt them. I hate that most advertisers are so hurtful to young women when they have the power to make a huge difference. I hope that teen girls see these messages and take them for what they are worth and I hope that they have someone in their lives to help them ignore all the negative images that they are forced to see on a regular basis.
ReplyDeleteLaura... you and I are totally on the same page about the Marc Jacobs ad... I really can't believe Victoria Beckham agreed to something so.... obviously not about her beauty... or her soul or anything... the media is starting to cut women's bodies a part. I am sure that at this rate unfortuantly women model will eventually start having to actually cut their body parts off, just to get a good and "edgy" shoot... geez
